Photographer Bushemi Dies Covering Eniwetok Invasion
YANK staff photographer Sgt. John A. Bushemi of Gary Indiana was fatally wounded by a Jap knee mortar during the Eniwetok invasion. He had joined the Army from the Gary Post-Tribune nearly three years earlier and covered campaigns in New Georgia Makin Tarawa and Kwajalein. His funeral was held aboard a transport off Eniwetok as ships bombarded the island.
