First American troops hit Kwajalein soil on D Day
Capt. Paul B. Gritta and 84 men of the Recon Cavalry landed on Gehk Island by mistake and fought through four days to clear Gehk Ninni and Bigej. They killed 106 Japanese, took three prisoners, with two Americans killed and 22 wounded. The unit then struck Ninni with no resistance and raised the first American flag in the Marshalls.
