Texas Troops Seize Arawe Beachhead in New Britain Fight
American Sixth Army National Guard Cavalry from Texas spearheaded a bridgehead seizure on Arawe in New Britain. Diversion mine fields and heavy Jap fire preceded the main landing at Blue Beach Umlingolu, with U S destroyers and Fifth Air Force B 25s assisting as waves of amphibians attacked House Fireman Beach and nearby islets. Many casualties occurred among the rubber boat troops before the main force forced a breakthrough.
