A secretive transient in North Yakima is accused of swindling several lodgers across six houses over weeks. Victims report missing sums, with the alleged thief using compromising acts to silence them. Landlords are unaware and police have not been notified.
Tuesday morning H J Snively was retained to defend ex Deputy Sheriff Walker of Franklin county charged with the murder of Charles Anderson who died in Spokane. A post mortem by Coroner Witter found death from a skull wound and resulting abscess. Prosecutor W D Schutt is in Spokane collecting evidence and has searched Leroy for witnesses.
The Sunday Post-Intelligencer reports a challenge from Charles M. Olsen, famed St. Louis wrestler, directed at Dr. Roller, the Seattle Athletic Club instructor, seeking a match.
North Yakima wrestler Louis Buchholtz writes the sporting editor offering to meet Charles Olsen on the coast in a catch as catch can bout. Buchholtz, six feet tall at 190 pounds with a seventy eight and a half inch reach, claims only one prior defeat and seeks Seattle or other coast venues.
Contractor Bruenn announced construction on the Moxee bridge would begin that morning with workers crossing the river by boat to the east side. The planned structure includes four spans totaling 280 feet, with steel for the spans already shipped and ready.
The junior class works on plans for the annual prom to honor the seniors. A meeting established the organizing committees and duties. Officials say the event will be a splendid affair and reflect well on the class.
Women of Woodcraft Rustic Circle No. 268 held a valentine social at Mrs. F. D. Clemmer's home with about forty neighbors and friends in attendance. The event featured guessing games and music, a gift of fur gloves to Mrs. Clemmer, followed by lunch and a report of an enjoyable evening.
Geo W Barber, employed by F D Clemmer for three years, is on a four week vacation visiting his Missouri home. During his absence Pat Jordan, pioneer barber, will officiate in his place.
President Roosevelt orders transfer of Panama canal construction to the army engineering branch, replacing private contract work and triggering the resignation of John F. Stevens. General Goethals to chair and lead, with Major Gallard and Major Siebert joining the commission, Blackburn to join after Senate retirement. Dislocations minimized to maintain continuous progress.
Will Everett, manager, announces expansion of machines to Grays Harbor Oregon and Idaho with five plans tailored to ground and location. The company will appraise placer claims and offer stock in exchange for title to develop and work the property. A Royalties deal with H. Robert is noted and further arrangements described.
Achsa Circle King's Daughters held a social afternoon at Mrs Hawkins home 301 North First Street with many members and guests. A program featured piano and vocal solos a reading and a second piano piece followed by a Wriggles game Miss Stacy won first prize a toy rabbit. Mrs Hawkins served sandwiches cake and coffee. The next meeting is set for March 12 at Mrs John W Forneys 568 South Natchez.
Oscar Spencer escaped from the Toppenish jail during the early hours Tuesday after friends allegedly supplied tools and a pony waiting outside. Spencer had been arrested Sunday for assaulting Johnny Jake an Indian resident of Toppenish, slashing him with a knife and beating him.
Charles J Holman issued a statement on behalf of his wife defending Evelyn Thaw’s upbringing. He says Evelyn was raised with Sunday school attendance and was never placed in the care of any man. He notes the public has heard only one side and urges educated people to consider both sides before judging.
On Monday March 4 at 12:10 p.m. the first spadeful of earth will be dug at the South Fourth street site near Yakima avenue. The ceremony includes a choir, prayer, and a speech to mark the start of a new YMCA building aimed at aiding young men and boys in the city and valley. Cascade mill whistles will blow noon to 12:05 as town notice.
After reviewing submissions from several architects the board of education accepted Architect W H Perrins plans Tuesday. Initial estimates favored Heath with an 85900 cost but Perrins later proposed an 80000 build and the board opted to adopt his design.
A Mabton meeting raised 1600 to fund a ferry over the Yakima river at Mabton Siunnyside road. Five trustees W H Pope HW M Kenyon George Miller T W Howell Z Sanger were named to manage the project with J A Humphrey treasurer and W B Pope president. A three member finance committee Crow Young Humphrey was formed. Site is west of the old bridge and landings are being prepared. Ferry to operate within ten days if no delays occur.
East bound train No. 16 derailed near Thorp Tuesday morning and ran into the east bank. No injuries or car damage. Passengers shaken but calm. Train No. 4 arrived late after leaving Thorp around 7:39. Westbound service held up. wrecking train sent. track cleared by 7:39 p.m. Cause: track spread. ditching risk if derailment had occurred west of the river.
