Japanese Church Offers First Funeral for Unknown Dead
A small band of Christian Japanese in the city arranged a funeral service for two unidentified men who perished in a August 3 fire on Yakima avenue. Rev. F. L. Hayden led the rite as mourners stood by bare graves, giving the slaves of the dead their first Christian burial. The Japanese community organized the service after learning the men had no burial due to anonymous identities and an incomplete inquest. The gathering, led by Wedne S. Mitsui and others, drew support from local Japanese residents and organizations who contributed to the memorial and assisted in escorting the bodies to their resting place.
