Scandalous Delay Cited in Patrick Case Veto Memo
Albany May 30. Governor Higgins calls the delay in the Patrick murder case scandalous in a veto memorandum. Albey Patrick, convicted of killing William M Rice in New York City in 1900, faces a pending motion for a new trial based on newly discovered evidence. The plea, introduced by Assemblyman Wade to modify criminal procedure, seeks relief from an order denying the motion. King's Narrow Escape From Madrid Bombing Killings
Madrid June 3 a royal procession by the Church of San Jeronimo ended in a near catastrophe when a bomb concealed in a bouquet exploded near the royal carriage. At least 16 people were killed and many wounded as the cortege entered the Esplanade toward the palace. King Alfonso and Queen Victoria escaped unharmed as the coach was halted by flying splinters and injured escort officers. The attack, possibly led by Manuel Duran, halted the procession and sparked a citywide shutdown of telegraph offices amid official fatigue and awe.
