Russia proposes tariff settlement linked to sugar policy
Russia offers to remove all added duties on American goods if the United States withdraws its sugar differential action. Secretary Gage rejects, noting sugar issues lie with the courts. The exchange, routed through the Russian foreign office and State Department, centers on sugar and related duties, with petroleum orders not a current issue. De Witte proposes vacating increased duties on cast iron wares, iron and steel products, boiler work, tools, meters, engines, sewing machines, and other machinery.
