A narrator recalls an abusive landlady and her family in a cold Christmas week. A hidden terror unfolds as the landlady dies, a child witnesses a spectral fear, and the narrator flees to daylight after witnessing the grim scene.
Fragmentary text extols a mother’s care and patience from infancy to adulthood. The narrator emphasizes a mother who guarded and soothed, taught prayers, offered shelter, and loved unconditionally through illness and distress, ending with a posed question about kindness returned.
The act allows the President to call volunteers for one, two, or three year terms with quotas credited to local districts. Bounties range from 100 to 800 dollars, paid in thirds during service, with survivors or widows receiving remaining sums. Drafts fill unsubdivided quotas after fifty days.
