Strikes Loom In Cincinnati As Amalgamated Warns Of Long Battle

Officials of the Amalgamated Association say they are satisfied with the first day of the walkout at United States Steel sheet steel and hoop plants. Most plants idle and many workers idle in open mills. Expected to settle before summer shutdowns, with 36,000 to 40,000 men in the two companies affected. Long struggle anticipated while negotiations continue with the steel hoop firm. Some mills have signed the new wage scale, including the Sharon Hanp company. American Tin Plate contingent on American Sheet Steel action.

Getting Together Cincinnati July 2 on plant dispute

A conference in Cincinnati between Laidlaw Dunn Gordon officials and striking machinists sought a settlement at the plant with August Herrman, president of the water works board acting as arbitrator. A revised proposal was agreed for the strikers to submit to their executive board. About 350 machinists work there and a settlement could spur others. In Pittsburgh the Amalgamated Association revision committee met to prune 26 years of constitutional dead wood, work likely to take a week and update the wage clause and chief executive powers.

Storm at Cincinnati ends heat spell with deaths

Storm from the southeast hit Cincinnati on July 2, bringing 60 mph winds, a shower, and a drop to 75 degrees. Heat record highs reached 96 at government stations and 99 on the street. Five people died from heat as telegraph and telephone wires were wrecked.

Arrival of Pingree's Remains in New York Harbor

Newport July 2 The Constitution was defeated by the Columbia by a narrow 48 seconds margin in the first race with the new Herreshoff yacht. The contest was close from start to finish and many sailors blame misfortune for the loss, while noting the outcome leaves the relative merits of the two yachts undecided.

Verdict For Thatcher Acquitted In Mercer Estate Forgery

Springfield Ohio June 28. George W Thatcher faced forgery charges over notes totaling 3256 000 alleged to bear the late millionaire P P Mast signature. Jurors returned a verdict of acquittal after a brief deliberation. Thatcher held notes aggregating 296 000 claimed Mast signed before death as representing sums Mast collected for the Mercer estate but not turned over to heirs. Mast executors said all were forgeries and Thatcher faced indictments on three notes. Trial on the first note previously ended in acquittal.

Train Brawl Ends in Arrest and Hospital Stay

On an eastern trip, John McKinney and Rogcee Barnet of Arcadia Indiana quarreled aboard a passenger train. McKinney was stabbed several times and taken to a hospital while Barnet was found in railroad yards and arrested. Barnet claims self defense after McKinney struck first. McKinney cannot explain the assault. Passengers separated them.

Swooned and Died in Heat at Cincinnati Shooting Club

Henry Meyer, president of the St. Bernard Shooting club, collapsed from heat prostration during a club meeting in Cincinnati. He weighed 230 pounds and died shortly after the swoon. In other notes, Republic Iron and Steel plants in Trenton plan to resume operations Monday, while Arkansas reports the first prosecution under the anti gambling act amid a Tennessee-tainted tale of the act’s enforcement.

Giant coal combine will control bituminous mines

Cleveland July 2 reports say a single big organization will absorb Ohio and West Virginia bituminous coal properties within two months. J P Morgan leads the push, coordinating Pittsburg Monongahela Massillon Hocking and other coal firms into one central company to monopolize production east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio. The plan includes lake docks and a central office with regional branches, aiming to dominate the coal market.

Ruthven Executed in Ohio Penitentiary

Edwin Ruthven, a Cleveland Black man, was executed in the Ohio state penitentiary electric chair after two governor grants of respite to pursue clemency. Death of Senator Kyle in Aberdest July 2

Senator James Kyle died Monday evening after a 10 day illness. He gradually worsened from Bright's disease and died within hours. His wife mourns as the family of five includes two children, daughter Othelwyn aged about 15 and a younger son. The city is in mourning for the highly esteemed senator.
