Capt Van Doorn a veteran of Co K 16 Ohio Vol. Infantry died after long illness at his home in Wooster aged 87. He served in the Civil War, took part in battles at Chickasaw Bayou and Philippi, and helped organize the 16th Ohio. Survived by widow Mrs J D Mulier and two daughters, funeral at Methodist church on Friday with services by the G A R. Interment Wooster Cemetery.

Ex-sheriff Charles F. Callahan of Youngstown shot himself in the head at 8:40 Friday morning, dying instantly after retiring from office and serving two terms as sheriff of Mantoring county. The 68 year old left a note citing forthcoming obligations he could not meet and requesting forgiveness. He had earlier been commander of Tad Post No. 2 G A R and frequented Wooster and Wayne County towns for pension business.

The Knox county Ohio claim states Mrs James Burke, age 33, is the state's youngest grandmother, living in Deckers. Her daughter Bertha married Jo Geff and recently had a granddaughter. Deputy State Inspectors W D Hall and Joby W Bath, urged by Prosecutor Weylands and the grand jury, examined the county jail. They condemned the heating, sewerage, and ventilation as faulty and urged abandonment of the jail as a prison soon. They declined to advise on the courthouse, stating the circuit judges hold full power.

Wade McChartan, eldest son of Probate Judge J A McChartan, had a severe skating accident Saturday afternoon. While alighting from a wagon loaded with baled hay at the B and O depot he slipped and his right foot was run over by a wheel. He returned home alone, his foot swollen and feared fractured, but doctors found only a badly bruised foot after swelling subsided.
