Ohio volunteer bounty bill aims for Spanish American War veterans
A proposed bill by Representative Smith of Cuyahoga would pay eight dollars to every honorably discharged Spanish American War veteran. Payments would be issued by the state auditor with a proper certificate of service and discharge. The plan caps attorney fees at ten percent or thirty dollars, and imposes up to a $500 fine or two years in prison for violations. If enacted, the program could exceed one million dollars and prioritize widows and minor children in the succession of payments if beneficiaries exist.
