United States Senate Debates Margarine Tax Bill
The Senate executive session discusses a vote on an amendment to control and tax oleomargarine. The House passed the margarine bill 196 to 2, with a minority-backed substitute defeated 113 to 178. The measure classifies margarine as degmargarime and regulates importation, coloring, and pricing within states or territories. The tax on colored oleomargarine rises from 2 to 10 cents per pound, while uncolored oleomargarine tax drops to half a cent. Debate names several lawmakers and notes plans to address the war revenue act after next week’s appropriations.
