A letter argues the value of weekly church ministration, claiming sustained intellectual nourishment from the ministry. It defends ministers as among the finest minds, contrasts devoted preachers with other pursuits, and asserts personal growth from regular attendance.
A Civil War dispatch describes a two day assault across Lookout Mountain and Missa Ridge. Union forces under Sherman Grant and Hooker stormed the ridge, with heavy losses on both sides but ultimately gained the position and secured the field. Prisoners and wounded listed, with captured artillery and reports of 40 pieces.
The Journal from Chattanooga notes Gen Breckinridge’s son captured. Killed include Capt Jarney Lt Wise Col Putnam. Wounded: Danl O Connor Capt Brouse Lt Col G Imore Capt Davis Adjt Tucker Lt Col Heath Major Johnson Adjutant Hard. Campfires blaze along the ridge eight miles as Bragg withdraws toward Atlanta. Rebels report demoralized as Union forces gain line along Missionary Ridge.
Washington reports Major General Halleck receives word that Grant has achieved a signal victory over Bragg. The Confederate defenses on Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and surrounding rifle pits in Chattanooga Valley were carried and are now held by Union forces. The battle spanned from dawn to dusk.
