The store announces deep cuts on unsold Sammeer sales items to clear space for daily fall arrivals from eastern markets. Prices are reduced on odd lots and broken lines in suits and skirts to move them quickly despite the perceived folly.
Ladies tailor made wool suits offered in daily wear styles. 25 suits priced at 2.98, originally 6.40. 40 suits in staple styles cleared to 4.98 from 10 and 15. Lot of wash suits about half price.
Lot of ladies' tailor-made walking skirts offered at 88c and 1.98, with listed values up to 5.00. White pique skirts 88c worth 1.50. Limon skirts noted. All Wash Goods advertised at substantial reductions.
Two Albany engineers died and several railroad workers were injured when a New York Central fast train derailed at Gulf Bridge, New York. Engineer Robert Ffy and Fireman Peter Conley were killed. several World, Sun, Rochester News, American and Journal staffers were injured. The train, at full speed, derailed on a sharp bridge curve, plunging the engine into the road embankment and the lead car down the slope.
Kingston Jamaica Aug 24 A schooner reports Cayman Islands devastated by two hurricanes. Georgetown village trees crops destroyed famine imminent and government aid anticipated. Seven schooners wrecked on the island.
Two masked highwaymen held up an electric trolley at the west end of Adams street. The motorman and conductor were robbed of $14 and their watches. Police pursued leads but details remain scarce.
Wheeling, Aug 17. Striking machinists clashed with nonunion workers at Riverside plant of United States Steel. About 20 new workers had been brought in, boarding houses of nonunionists were attacked and barricaded, and many shots were fired. Several injured, including spectator Clay Hoover, while police were unable to intervene. A fresh outbreak feared.
The Reliance crossed the line at 1:15:07 to win the race by 52 seconds over the Shamrock amid clear weather. The Shamrock trailed closely in the early stages, with Reliance gaining the lead as wind strengthened. In other reports Turkish forces faced defeats and insurgents claimed several engagements across the Balkan region.
