An elderly man lies in a stupor and delirium, asking for the missionary Mr Harris and muttering about not hating him. He speaks of his companions, blesses his wife and children, and dies as family and authorities gather. A simple burial in the mission churchyard follows, with a vial of cold water placed in his hand per his wishes.
