A Civil War era speaker advocates harsh measures to weaken the enemy. He proposes conscripting Northern critics into hard marching, 260 pound packs, and half rations for six months to force traitors to flee or surrender and to seize resources from rebels to end the war.
An 1863–1868 selection includes a cavalry note praising Union resolve and opposition to secession, followed by wartime resignations of officers and a vivid battle scene. The pieces contrast Republican and Democratic factions and end with a poignant tale of two weary foes choosing forgiveness beside a stream, leaving two fatherless children.
In Camp Before Vaoxspura LA March 4 1863 a soldier writes home of scarce news and seeks updates from home. He weighs peace terms preferring long war to dishonor and explains Southern suffering, desertion of wealthier planters, and scarce corn along the Heelestyet valley while troops’ health and supply conditions slowly improve.

Vermilion Institute and Excelsior Literary Society mourn the death of Thomas J Armstrong first lieutenant of the 120th Regiment O V L. The resolutions praise his generosity and faithfulness, commend him as a bright ornament, and state sympathy to his family. The committee requests publication in Wooster and Ashland papers and adjournment in his memory.
About eleven months and eighteen privates from Ohio regiments were detailed by General Mitchel for special duty in Georgia to destroy railroads and harm the enemy. Rebels captured seven, hanged six, and imprisoned the rest. Six returned to Washington Monday under flag of truce, meeting Judge Advocate General Holt and the Secretary of War. The Secretary awarded medals, $100 to each, paid arrears, and a pension-equivalent sum, and requested Governor Tod to appoint them as lieutenants in the volunteers or brevet them in the regular service. They then met the President at the Executive Mansion.

A Bridgeport woman with Connecticut ties inherits a plantation in Arkansas after debt. Her enslaved foreman and workers raise crops to reduce the debt, improving education for the overseer's son, while the family splits between Connecticut and Arkansas amid war distances and fears of rebel conscription. The correspondent notes the lesson on black self-management and asks editors to consider the implications.
