Wisconsin Territory enacts changes for Geneva village electing a resident justice of the peace, duties and penalties for officers, tax procedures, school districts, and village governance. Also divides Milton into Lima town and creates the Wisconsin Phalanx with stock rules, officers, meetings, and a free school. Approved February 1845.
The act amends prior law to allow indictable offenses under the liquor act to Indians to be prosecuted in district court with penalties up to 100 dollars fine or up to three months in county jail or both. It directs district courts to charge grand juries on the amended and prior acts while preserving justice of the peace prosecutions.
An act to organize parts of Fond du Lac County into Careaco town. Legal voters to meet first on the first Tuesday of April at Lester Rounds’s house at ten o’clock. Future meetings to be at locations chosen by the town meeting. Approved January 23, 1845.
An act appropriates two thousand six hundred sixteen dollars to Dane County for completing the capital and funds an academy in Madison. The payment rests with the territorial treasury and requires a county vote at the next election. Augustus A. Bird, contractor, may receive four hundred dollars. the balance goes to the county. The act details tax reporting, timing, and funds from the territorial treasury after existing debts are settled, effective upon approval.
An act relates to assessments in Richland county. It repeals part of an 1842 act authorizing Iowa county officials to assess personal property in Richland. The measure takes effect after passage. Approved February 22, 1845.
