A parcel of news from Winthrop reports ground was broken for St John s Episcopal church s new parish house after a strong sermon by Rev C W Henry. The project grows from a church population now over 400 families with 300 Sunday school pupils and aims to include a gymnasium and a 350 seat hall with stage.
Despite efforts by a business committee and Inter delit to persuade Colonel William F. Oakes to exit the race, the Republican candidate for Congress in the ninth district will remain on the ballot as of the 5 p.m. Tuesday withdrawal deadline. The notice notes that Mrs. Florence M. Dunning of Battle Creek Michigan is granted a permit to build a frame dwelling on Shirley and Terrac avenues with local supervision by Robert Brown of Sargent Street providing design and drawings.
The Winthrop Woman's Club met in Social hall on Friday October 21 with Mrs Helen F Gardner presiding. Eleanor Flinn played The Rose and Marion Nichols performed a reading from Lewis Rand by Mary Johnston. The club mourned Julia Ward Howe and sang Battle Hymn of the Republic as the meeting adjourned.
The Quest and Question club met at 36 Summit Avenue Tuesday October 25 with Mrs Elizabeth Hayes presiding in the president’s absence. Resolutions noted the death of Mrs Helen Wright and a delegate was chosen for the state Federation meeting at Cambridge November 8.
Mrs Edwin H Leonard and Mr John Leonard returned from Chicago with guests a brother of Mrs Leonard and Mrs Mosher a sister of Mr Leonard staying with them for the past two weeks and ending the visit.
