James R Gerrish, master of the Deer Island house of correction, defies orders but agrees to leave if directed. A mayoral hearing is set for May 10, 1907, on Gerrish’s removal, with counsel present and protest noted.
At a regular meeting, Selectmen appointed F. W. F. Woolcott as fire engineer replacing S. Mahaney who resigned. Mahaney’s prior appointment was temporary. NE Telephone reps presented a police signal system plan costing about 350 with the town to consider adoption.
Deputy James H. Cronin of Deer Island house of correction, who led the women's department since its opening, is named deputy master, succeeding Lorenzo D. Perkins who was removed by Penal Institutions Commissioner John B. Martin. Cronin previously dismissed an officer at Dest Island in 1804, and his retirement margin is under review.
The annual Winthrop Woman's Club meeting closes a successful season. Reports by secretaries and treasurers highlighted a prosperous year. Officers were elected with Mrs. as president.
Monument foundation work began Tuesday on the library grounds where the monument committee the library trustees the Board of Selectmen and War Veterans officers met. The inscription to be placed honors those who died for the nation and lists memorial messages for 1861 1865. Real estate transfers include Almira Tewksbury to Rebecca Woolcott on Willow avenue and Susan A. Macgowen to Lucian M. Foster on Pleasant street for $1 each.
