Winthrop Bill Favored After Senate Vote
The Senate ordered a third reading 21 to 8 on a measure to pay Winthrop 8000 dollars to partly repay the cost of the Short Beach sea wall built after a heavy storm. Senator Fisher defended the move saying the town acted after Harbor and Land Commission declined to fund it. Senator Bagley warned of eroding shore and urged state support to protect property and the metropolitan sewer system.

Winthrop Yacht Club Hosts Record Dinner Evening
The Winthrop Yacht Club held its largest dinner to date on Tuesday April 29 with nearly 300 served. Tables featured red and pink carnations and white-attired attendants. Prizes went to Mrs. Stiles Mrs. Brigham and Mrs. Christopher for bridge while Miss Dealy Miss Hassan and Mrs. Lazell won whist prizes. An orchestra of three local men provided music as chairwomen led the event and numerous committees arranged tables and centerpieces including a boat-themed centerpiece.

The Popular Authors' Literary Club of Winthrop met Tuesday with Mrs Margaret F Tobey presiding as vice president Mrs Jane G Rogers was elected president for the coming year along with Pauline Bacon as vice president Helen L Frasier as recording secretary Laura A Mirick as corresponding secretary and Louise A Henry as treasurer An essay by Mrs Rogers titled The Hidden Republic and Franklin H Wills Winthrop High School pupil who won a medal for The Progress of Civil Service Reform in Massachusetts was read by Mrs Ridley.

Court Park Club Festivities Include Dances and Prizes
At the weekly whist Mrs. A. R. Chambers won the prize and Mrs. Norman Fish claimed the bridge prize. Hostess was Mrs. W. H. Carstensen. Last Saturday there was an informal dance and another is planned next Saturday with a new piano player. A supper and entertainment are set for Saturday May 10 and another dance for May 17.

Basket Party by Spanish War Veterans Auxiliary
The Women’s Auxiliary of the Spanish War Veterans Association held a basket party in War Veterans hall on Tuesday with about 150 attendees. Guests enjoyed dancing and whist followed by a basket lunch where prepared baskets were assigned to donors. Prizes in whist went to several named ladies and gentlemen.
