275th Anniversary Celebration Under the Gibbons Elm

The 275th anniversary celebration at Winthrop centers under the town’s ancient elm marking a century and a half of local unity. Notables include the Winthrop Improvement and Historic Association, town officials, clergymen, 60 public school teachers, Civil War veterans, and members of patriotic societies. The event recalls early land grants at Pullen Point neck and the parcels allotted to Willyam Peirce and Edward Gibbon, with reference to Captain William Pierce and Deane Winthrop’s former home nearby.

Winthrop Ancients Mark Historic Pullen Point Allotments

A Winthrop ceremony gathered residents and visitors at the old Pullen Point site to honor early land grants by the Massachusetts Bay Company. Speakers recounted 17th century allotment practices, naming key settlers such as John Oliver Edmond Gibbons and Governor John Winthrop, with markers and a repainted tablet displayed at the tree site.
