Winthrop Seawall Construction Starts on Coastal Project

The Town of Winthrop begins a coastal defense project between Great Head and Point Shirley. The Fred T. Ley Company of Springfield awarded the contract to build a 1000 foot Portland cement sea wall with timber bulkhead and five jetties, totaling 370 feet, plus back-filling and grading. Engineers Whitman & Howard of Boston drew the plans. Completion is set for August 15.

Captain Charles E Stevenson 76 Dies After Brief Illness

Captain Charles E Stevenson of 12 Pico Avenue died June 11 after five weeks of illness following a shock. Born May 4 1833 in Belfast Maine he spent 25 years at sea rising from cabin boy to master mariner. He commanded large ships including the first double top-sail ship and was shipwrecked six times. He retired to Winthrop over forty years ago and celebrated a golden wedding last year. Funeral Monday at 3 pm at his home with Masonic service. Adelphi Quartet sings. Survived by widow Susan E Stevenson son George S H Stevenson daughter Mrs Adair Outhank brother John Stevenson sister Mrs Rachel Fuller and several grandchildren.

Annual Social of the club Treshiven

The club Treshiven held its annual social in the gym Friday night with president Max Gersumky leading the grand march for dancers Miss Anna Burke and Misses Lucille Pennington Ruth Ordway Ruth Kalish George Becker Atha Poote bard Wesley Dunham. A program featured Miss Mabelle Howatt Miss Dorothy Belcher Miss Ethel G Studley pianists Miss Violet Minifie soprano and Edward Pero Beatrice Douglas loaders. Light refreshments were served and about 150 guests enjoyed the evening.

Golden Wedding for Russell Tewksbury and Wife at Home

Russell Tewksbury celebrated his golden wedding anniversary at 15 Bates Avenue with an informal reception. Born 1833, he moved to Revere and Chelsea before starting a milk business in Chelsea, a career spanning 44 years. He belonged to Mystic Lodge, J O O F, and the Masons. He is a descendant of John Fenno and Olive Pratt, linked to East Boston’s early ferry service.
