Winthrop Church Anniversary Marked by Fortieth Year

The First Church of Winthrop Methodist celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a weekend of events. Rev. Charles S. Nutter of Boston preached, David Floyd delivered an historical sketch, and music featured soprano Mrs. Wellington P. Douglas and violinist Miss Pauline Tucker. A Monday debate by the Men’s Brotherhood favored the view that today’s church is more influential than forty years ago. The celebration included a flag raising, a lawn gathering delayed by rain, a reception for former pastors, and a banquet followed by evening exercises with remarks from former pastors and guests. The program closed with addresses by several clergymen and solos by Mrs. Orville E. Johnson and Mrs. Winton J. Baltzell.

Early Methodist Meeting Recounted With Historic Notes

The article recalls a recent church gathering led by Rev. James F. Allen with prayers and songs by the Tilton 8. 8. class as the flag was raised by the Winthrop Veterans' Association. Rev. Porter M. Vinton spoke. Mrs. Baltzell and Mrs. Johnson sang. David Floyd read a paper on old Pullen Point church history noting the 1818 formation of the first Methodist Society and the 1834 erection of a church now Dunham's block.
