Sunday Baseball At Fort Banks May Continue

Secretary of War Stimson may allow Sunday baseball at Fort Banks but will bar civilians from the grounds. Gen Leonard Wood advised continuation for soldiers, noting crowds from Winthrop create the issue and promising passes for soldiers and relatives. Selectmen expect no further action if Washington enforces attendance limits.

Narrow Escape From Drowning Off Deer Island

Three men and three women narrowly escaped drowning when the Annabelle a 25 foot gasoline launch owned by James E Farrell struck a submerged obstruction offshore Deer Island Beach Memorial Day The vessel sank briefly but all aboard were rescued and later towed to Point Shirley for beaching and drying out clothes before returning home Local residents from Somerville Charlestown and the Winthrop Yacht Club aided in rescue and recovery of the craft

Knights of Columbus Baseball Triumph at Ingleside Park

The Winthrop Knights of Columbus baseball team defeated Dorchester A A 10 to 7 at Ingleside Park on Memorial Day. Dorchester featured former college stars Mayo Carlisle Sheehan Matthews. Knights set clash with North End Union at Ingleside Park on Saturday June 3 at 3 30 p m aiming to continue their winning run.

War Veterans Observe Memorial Day in Winthrop

Veterans from the Winthrop War Veterans association with a Fort Banks squad and auxiliary groups held Memorial Day rites. A morning band concert at Ingleside park preceded a parade to Winthrop cemetery and the Soldiers' monument, with wreaths laid and services conducted.

Harold Baker Buried After Train Tragedy Near Winthrop Beach

Funeral services for Harold Baker were held at the Methodist church after he was killed by a train near Winthrop Beach station. Rev. James F. Allen officiated with Rev. Charles Tilton assisting, as pallbearers from the Boston Y M C A and Tilton athletic club attended. Interment followed at Winthrop cemetery. survivors include his parents, three sisters, and two brothers.

Senator Grainger Forces Reimbursement for Winthrop Sea Wall

In the state senate last Friday Senator Grainger overturned the Ways and Means Committee's adverse report on a bill to reimburse Winthrop up to 8000 for half the cost of Short Beach sea wall. He noted the state responsibility mirrored Marblehead breakwater funding. The senate approved the bill 23 to 10.

Winthrop Athletics Win at Newton on Memorial Day

Winthrop Athletics beat the Nonantums of Newton by 3 to 2 on Memorial Day in Newton. Stockwell pitched well with 5 hits allowed and 12 strikeouts as Noel starred at shortstop for Winthrop. Stockwell and Tewksbury hit doubles and King supported Stockwell. one baserunner stole on him. Team returns to Winthrop June 10 to face Bay View of South Boston.
