Edward B. Newton was selected at the recent preliminary caucus to contest the senatorial seat for this district. The caption notes the photograph of Mr. E. B. Newton accompanying the selection.
Veterans from the Winthrop War Veterans Association led a parade from headquarters with a band and firing squad from Fort Banks to the cemetery. Services included a dirge, prayers by Asa M. Chapin, grave decorating, wreaths for Civil War and Spanish War veterans, and speeches by Commander John McNaught and Rev. Fr. John H. Griffin. The procession reached Columbia Square and concluded with a rally at the former Commander Foxcroft residence as the band played Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot. The association now counts 26 surviving members.
A memorial service for Rev. Dr. L. B. Bates was held at East Boston Bethel with Bishop Mallalieu preaching and a flower service at Woodlawn cemetery attracting over 500 mourners. Gov. Draper nominated Frank E. B. Dimick for the East Boston district court post and Charles J. Brown of Winthrop for the same court, both to replace retiring officials.
Letter to the editor lauds Winthrop Cemetery for outstanding Memorial Day upkeep. Caller credits superintendent Robert Walker with the excellent condition and beauty of the grounds, noting residents decorated more than usual. An advertisement mentions The Ideal Vacuum Cleaner Company handling cleaning orders for Winthrop properties.
The Tilton Athletic Club spent the holiday at Asbury Grove. They traveled Friday and Saturday, returning Tuesday morning. They won three baseball games including a 7-4 win over a Lynn English High School group and a 13-6 victory against Beverly. Verner pitched well, and track events featured Verner, Sproule, and Stevenson with relay teams and jumps. They attended a dance at Idlewood Lake in the evening.
The Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association will hold its monthly meeting at the Deane Winthrop House on Monday evening June 6. Supper is served at 6 30 PM for 25 cents.
