Winthrop Partners in War Savings Drive Plans

The Winthrop Women’s War Work Committee met at the public library hall to finalize a house-to-house canvass for the War Savings Stamps Drive. The drive runs June 7 to June 28 with a quota of 3 189 pledges, under general chairwoman Mrs. S. Ernest Griffin and precinct leaders guiding a corps of sub‑chairmen.

Local Dentist Commissioned for War Duty at Camp Wadsworth

Dr. Fleming, a Harvard Dental School graduate and Boston English High alumnus born in Roxbury, was commissioned in the Medical Reserve Corps last July. He led dental work for Winthrop Machine Gun Company members who have since gone overseas. He is the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Fleming of 24 Mermaid Avenue. His brother Neil Fleming recently left for Naval Aviation Camp in Charleston.

Winthrop Veterans Parade To Cemetery Observes Memorial Day

Memorial Day in Winthrop was observed by the War Veteran Association with Spanish War Veterans and allied groups. A procession from Pauline street at 9 am escorted to Winthrop Cemetery by Co A. M. S. G. under Capt. John J. Keefe. Chaplain Capen led prayers, Commander McNaught gave a patriotic address, and Lincoln's Gettysburg address was recited by A. M. Smith with band solos and taps by Copeland and Vincent.

Registration for 21 year olds under 1918 draft ends June 5

President Wilson signs the bill designating Wednesday June 5 as the registration day for men reaching 21 since June 5, 1917, or by June 5, 1918. Crowder directs local boards to handle the process, with in person registration at the local board between 7 am and 9 pm and provisions for absentees or illness.

Winthrop State Guard Marks First Anniversary Banquet

The first anniversary of Company A was celebrated at the armory with a banquet. Awards honored top shooters in target practice, and Captain Keefe led speeches by clergy, city officials, and veterans. Private Howard Irwin received a commission and paid tribute to officers.

Flower Day Set By Winthrop Visiting Nurse Association

Next Saturday June 8 Winthrop residents will observe annual flower day with rose sales at every station to support the Visiting Nurse Association. Nurses made 2074 calls in the past year including 723 free and 152 part pay. funds aid soldier families and gratuitous care for the sick, aged, and needy.
