Last Tuesday evening the Winthrop Fire Department tested a fire steamer on Shirley street drawing salt water from the harbor instead of a hydrant. Two lines were laid toward Cottage Hill achieving 140 psi and a potential head of 320 feet, showing salt water drafting can supply firefighting needs if hydrants fail.

Firemen Respond To Three False Alarms In Winthrop
Winthrop firefighters rushed to three calls Wednesday evening and into the early hours, all false alarms. The first at Shirley street top of a pole near Point Shirley, the second from box 16 at Young's Hotel, and the midnight run from box 6 toward Point Shirley ended without a blaze. Ed Lougee chased a man at the box but could not catch him.
