A 1909 town appropriation summary notes an total increase of 200850.70 and total appropriations of 32941.70. It lists borrowed amounts, estimated receipts, and a net gain in valuation exceeding one million dollars. This permits a tax rate reduction of about one cent per 1000, with roughly half the gain due to new buildings. Signed by E. S. Freeman Secretary of Assessors.
In Massachusetts the Winthrop forts Fort Banks and Fort Heath prepared for defense during a week long war game. Monday night’s incident near Nahant spurred strict discipline with outposts, passes, and ready guns while searchlights and range finders stayed active.
The notice directs activities or instructions to be carried out on the land side each evening this week.
A surprise party honored East Boston resident Philips on his seventy second birthday at his granddaughter’s home on Sargent Street. Guests included family and friends who sent poems and letters from afar and presented a gold scarf pin. A large birthday cake capped the celebration.
