State tax prospects rise as 1973 gains spur levy cuts
State revenues show gains from higher business activity and federal sharing, enabling legislatures to cut levies by about 500 million this year. Tax Foundation notes 27 states reduced taxes while some increases targeted corporate income and sales tax exemptions. Economic momentum suggests solid revenue into early 1974, though fuel shortages and rising costs raise inflation risks and potential future tax hikes. New Hampshire stands apart with no income or sales tax, while burden ranges vary across states from low in Connecticut and Nevada to high in California and New York.
