Roger Babson argues during a Copenhagen visit that Norway Sweden and Denmark are welfare states with free health care old age pensions and government services yet retain private ownership and democracy. He notes Denmark as a free port with lenient customs and strong shopping appeal for tourists.
The author extols Copenhagen as a model free of war tariffs and a hub for silverware porcelain and home electrical goods while noting Sweden's neutrality in WWII. He recounts a Philadelphia led effort after World War I to end tariffs to foster global economic equality and hints at reviving the movement with Copenhagen as a potential World Center. He also questions tariff reductions amid disarmament talks and seeks views from Germany Poland and Russia.
Lt. W. M. Howell reports October 1959 Rural Traffic Accident Summary for Coke to Val Verde Counties. Total accidents 53 with 33 property, 18 personal injury, 2 fatal. Property damage $49,375. 24 injured, 2 killed. Arrests 527 for DWI 9 and speeding 345 among others.
Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9193 met at the post home with Mrs. Frank Brown presiding. They voted to send five dollars monthly to the Veterans Hospital in Big Spring and to send ten homemade cakes for Christmas. A request for pocket size books was made and donors can phone for pickup. They approved a record player purchase for floorwork and reported a clothing box given to a needy family with another ready for delivery Tuesday. Thanksgiving baskets will be delivered at 2 p.m. November 25. donations by phone are welcome. The Cancer Drive begins with a goal of one dollar per member. An Honor Roll for December was appointed, along with a Patriotic Instructor. Members urged participation in the remaining membership drive to reach 97 by November 30. Pumpkin pie and coffee were served after the business session. attendees listed include Mesdames Sellers, Paske, Watson, Awalt, Wilson, Giles, Scott, Collins, and Miss Nevell Fisher.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sawyer of Rotan visited Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Lindley.
Lavera Williams hosted the Sub Deb Club gathering Monday evening at her parents home. Nancy Roberts led the business portion and Toni Johnson called the roll. A treasurer's report was given and money for Christmas cards was submitted. The group set November 24 for the Thanksgiving banquet and discussed a Christmas parade float.
Bronte resident Oleta Brice will marry Robert H Webb of Bradshaw on November 28. Parents Mr and Mrs J T Brice of Bronte announce the engagement and upcoming wedding plans for their daughter to the Bradshaw groom’s family hosts.
More than one hundred citizens attended the West Texas Utilities open house Friday at the local office from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Homer Hudgins, manager, said hostesses included Abby Andrews of Fort Worth and Ruth Clampitt of Ballinger. Turkey and ham sandwiches, cookies and coffee were served. Out of town visitors included Bob Dixon of Abilene.
