Gov. Daniel announces lawmakers will reconvene next week to address the 65 million dollar 1960 61 budget deficit and tax measures. The session is expected to require multiple 30 day specials with open shop teaching and a slate of defeated bills awaiting revived debate.

The House passed a resolution opposing federal regulation of wages for imported farm labor and sent it to the U S Department of Labor and Congress. Senate approved a bill to abolish county school superintendent offices but limited to Young and Parker counties. Unemployment in Texas totals 58 410, down from 90 946 in May 1958. Speaker Waggoner Carr received tributes on Speaker's Day amid a rough session.
The Sub Deb Club met May 11 at Robert Gans home with Mrs Gans and Mrs W T Stapler hosting. New officers were elected led by Nan cy Roberts as president and Edna Mayfield as vice president. Seniors Rena Minzenmayer Karen Parrish Bud Puckett Beverly Bedford Bunny Lloyd Joann Alfrey Barbara Dunn Ophelia Dietz Marilyn Mitchell Sammie Jones and Marc Knox were honored with farewell speeches and gifts.
Ten Runnels County home demonstration clubs gather with Agent Ollie Chenoweth in the courthouse conference room on May 8. Secretary Neuman Smith reads commendations to officers and Chenoweth for the District 8 convention success at Ballinger on April 16. State and district officials attend and praise the event.
The Electric Times edited by Jim mie Martin of the Public Service Department of West Texas Utilities Company won first place in the 1959 Better Copy Contest by the Public Utilities Advertising Association. PUAA announced May 9 in Dallas noting the magazine’s first award in this category after prior wins in advertising and displays. The Electric Times is in its thirty second year of publication.
The Electric Times editor for 14 years and Martin receive top national recognition. The 36th Better Copy Contest drew over 2,000 entries across employee and private utility publications, with Electric Times winning first in the top category for utilities with 100,000 plus customers. In Colburn home, Cisco visitors greet the Colburns and family.
Mrs Mary Pankey returned Sunday to her Kaufman home after spending a month visiting in the home of Mrs W A Pace.
