Winters High to Host Feb One-Act Play Tourney

A 1933 Winters event lineup includes a Feb 17 one act play tournament benefiting the Choral Club with Lions Literary Service and Diversity Clubs contributing. Other items list the University Interscholastic League basketball tourney for Runnels County on Feb 3–4, a new hatchery by W R Moreland, and local civic activities.

Winters and Abilene Events Highlight 1938 Activities

Runnels County agents planned a joint Daily Day in April to be held in Abilene. The Junior Class chose the play Dont Ever Grow Up directed by Mrs. C. S. Jackson. Tad Richards announced his candidacy for Commissioner of Precinct 3. Winters merchants raised about 375 for the Vocational Agriculture Show and Rodeo to be held Feb 18. A Winters fever for fashion notes boleros for mature figures. The 1938 paper warns that Monday is the last day to pay poll taxes. Three one act plays were to be staged in Winters Feb 4 to support the School Pep Squad.

Ration limits set at five cans in 1943 plan

Twenty years ago on January 29 1943 new rationing capped personal food possession at five cans with penalties for excess. The week saw thirty four men report for duty to begin training and Winters Wingate FFA members held an annual milk fed calf show with eleven calves displayed alongside other projects. School taxes were due that week.

Governor Connally marked 12 months in office with a busy inauguration season, promising progress while trimming spending. Legislature considers lowering Texas voting age to 18

Berry files a bill proposing a constitutional amendment to allow 18 year olds to vote in Texas. Present law requires voters to be 21. The measure aims to change age eligibility through legislative action.

Rural Texas boosters propose sales tax rebate plan

East Texas lawmakers Rep. Joe Cannon Mexia and H G Wells Tul as push a program aiding small counties. Counties under 45000 population would get a two percent sales tax refund to be allocated by county judges to city councils for attracting new industries and incentives. Wells estimates about 200 counties would qualify and about 1 million dollars could be distributed in the first year.

Wells warns counties face exodus as by passes and highways shift populations. The Southwest Health Research Foundation seeks 1 000 000 to sustain the screwworm eradication program before a March deadline. Governor Connally urges quick legislative action to decide program continuation.

Texas March draft quota hits 404 men

The March quota for Texas is 404 men, more than double the previous months. Selective Service Director Co. 4 rs S. Schwartz notes February quota was 173 and January was 163 men.
