About 100 patrons and district leaders gathered Monday evening at Winters High School to hear Carroll Tatum explain the Governors Committee on Public School Education report. The plan proposes consolidating districts so no district has fewer than 2600 students, potentially changing school locations and urging public input to the Legislature.
Lt Cmdr John C Tibbs, a Winters resident and Distinguished Flying Cross recipient, serves as assistant for air on Vice Admiral Cousins staff aboard the Constellation, later to transfer to Kitty Hawk. He has 42 years in the Navy and prior Viet Nam combat missions, plus 10 Air Medals. He schedules air strikes for three carriers and briefs on air support for South Vietnam allied troops.
County Judge W H Rampy designates January 13 to 18 as Farm Bureau Week in Runnels County as a statewide effort to boost Texas Farm Bureau membership beyond 110 689 in 1968 The local bureau ended 1968 with 941 member families Hugo Vogelsang of Ballinger is president Membership chairman Marion Hays Ballinger leads volunteers including Carl Gottschalk B T Gardner I W Conway and many others named in the proclamation and list of supporters.
James Williams superintendent announces a public meeting at Wingate School at 7 30 p m. The session is part of the Governors Committee on Public School Education and will explore the impact on the district.
The Blizzard basketball squad travels to Stamford Friday night January 17 seeking to regain second place in the District T-AA standings.
Dry Manufacturing Company of Winters will display hundreds of metal registers grilles and diffusers along with new plastic versions at the 19th International Heating and Air Conditioning Exposition in Chicago January 27 30. Six representatives will meet an estimated 25000 visitors, showcasing products under the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers auspices and highlighting Texas manufacturing strength.
The Blizzardettes coached by Freddie Gardner defeated Hamlin 46 36 Tuesday night. Debra Carroll led scoring with 21 points followed by Joy Awalt with 14. Winters guards Ta itum Beard Mc Neill and Hoppe held Hamlin to three field goals in the second half while the team maintained the lead heading into district play.

Electric and street bonds lead debt, with $670,000 total indebtedness and planned retirements starting 1970. Cash and investments rose, hospital costs up, waterworks down, and overall general fund revenue up to $181,988 while expenses fell to $138,600.
Winters mothers will march to support the March of Dimes campaign for birth-defect research and aid for affected children. The group meets at 5 30 p m on Tuesday at the Dry Manufacturing Co office to begin the Mothers March. Contributors may leave porch lights burning and call the chairman or workers to arrange pickups. Funds support research and assistance for children born with defects.
R V Hardegree, ex Winters teacher and school superintendent, heads Artco-Bell Corp. in Temple. The firm began seven years ago and has grown into a $4 million classroom tools business, reflecting Hardegree’s early roots and vision.
Winters native Bill Miller, a former AAU and McMurry College track star, is hired as interim head track coach at Dallas Baptist College. A 1963 McMurry graduate and Winters High School alum, Miller set Texan long jump marks, competed in Olympic trials, and taught at Abilene high schools before this college appointment.
The Winters Independent School District board approved a resolution opposing the Governor's Committee on Public School Education rule requiring a minimum of 2600 students in districts. The document will be sent to state leaders. The board also granted contract extensions to Superintendent Carroll Tatum and athletic director Jerry Gibson.
