Texans face a January 31 deadline to pay poll taxes as part of upcoming elections. Texas motorists will see red at highway construction sites with new fluorescent vests and flag signals for traffic control.
Texans must pay the poll tax by January 31 to vote in 1961 elections though the year is off year. Lyndon B. Johnson resigns from the Senate on Congress opening day. Gov Price Daniel appoints William A. Blakley to serve until a successor is elected in spring. A special election for the remainder of the term is set for April 4 with a runoff if no candidate gains a majority.

J C Dick Williams 47 of Houston former Winters resident died Friday at Veterans Hospital Houston after a Dec 30 stroke. Born August 16 1913 he lived in Dale and Winters before wartime service in Puerto Rico. Funeral Sunday at Winters Church of Christ with burial Lakeview Cemetery. Survivors include wife son Jay Clarence 10 parents M H Williams Sr and Birdie Williams, sisters Annie and Forrest Carter, brothers Rufus, M H Jr.

Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Boone of Woodsboro spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Hary and Dale Jones. They also attended the funeral of J. C. Williams, her brother-in-law.
