In a shaky start to 1961 residents are urged to pay poll taxes to vote in local city council elections and the LBJ vacancy when politics loom. The piece notes possible further openings, shifting taxes, and a busy year ahead with state and national policy questions and upcoming livestock shows.
Sited parents Mr and Mrs B H Denson and S Ricky and Kerry of Colorado recently visited with their cats Mr and Mrs Floyd Con of Drasco and Mr and Mrs H Denson Sr of Wingate.
Delbert Downing of the Midland Chamber of Commerce will be the principal speaker at the Winters Chamber of Commerce annual banquet set for Thursday night January 12 in the school cafeteria at 7 30. E C Grind staff will host as master of ceremonies and Jackie Canada will perform on the electric organ.
Tony Rougas and Patrick Gunn, both surgical patients, were dismissed on Friday and Saturday respectively. Eddie Grun Loleta Grun and Mrs Trinidad Ardiales also listed as medical or surgical patients with multiple dismissals summarized. Other medical patients include Travis Downing Mrs Gene Holloway Paul Morris J D Bynum Barbara Maupin Hortense Sanchez Albert Lewis Donald Fulton and Lynell Greer.
Lewis Blackmon, once affiliated with local garages in Winters, returns from Midland and opens a shop east of Smith Drug Co on West Dale. He previously worked with Elder Chevrolet Co in Midland and will offer full automotive maintenance services.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Brown and Mr and Mrs Don Van Meter attended the Cotton Bowl football game in Dallas on Monday.
The Valley Creek Water Control District will elect four directors on Tuesday January 10. Voting sites are Wingate for residents north of the Winters Bronte FM Road 384 and North Norton for residents south of it. Holdover directors include Hugo Vogelsang and Adolph Minzenmayer. Directors may be chosen from district property owners, with terms expiring for Duncan Hensley Milton Jackson L. O. Byrd and G. G. Franks. Work on watershed protection and flood prevention is expected to start this spring after boundary corrections and a validating act.
The Glacier annual from Winters High School earned an All Texas Honor Rating for 1960 in the state yearbook contest. Texas Woman's University Department of Journalism sponsors the event in Denton, with awards for photography editing theme and composition.
Ray Heathcott named as patrolman on the Winters police force by Mayor Harvey D. Jones this week. He had previously served on the Winters force but left for other lines of work for several months.
Southern District Scouters plan program for Chisholm Trail Council at Eula school on Tuesday Jan 10 at 7 p m. James Randolph of Winters to chair District Committee meeting covering first aid rifle and archery meets courted events and many scout activities. Harold Prater of Coleman leads unit leader round table with Cubmasters and Scoutmasters. Travis Bohannon of Coleman oversees Order of Arrow meetings. Southern District membership hits 674 boys in 37 units in 1960.
A. W. Libbe was re-elected president of the local chamber of commerce board of directors. Homer Hudgins as vice president, John W. Norman as treasurer, and Mrs. B. B. Bedford continuing as secretary and acting manager. A 1961 director slate includes Libbe and others. holdovers listed. The Winters FFA 4 H Livestock Show on January 7 features cattle sheep swine and capons with showmanship and division trophies. Exhibitors include Winters chapter members and area 4 H members. general public invited with no admission charge.
Dickie Hale was elected Girl of the Month for December by the FHA in the meeting held after school on December 14. A letter from the Chamber of Commerce was read and Dickie Hale reported on the concession stand for the Boys' Basketball Tournament. FHA pictures were taken in the Homemaking cottage.
Mr and Mrs Gene Virden and Betty spent the holidays with their daughter and family in Tacoma Washington. They visited sister George Coder and sons in Seattle and rang in the New Year with daughter Don Davis and Marie Virden in Abilene and Clarendon Texas before returning home Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Merrifield and their son Glenn of San Diego left Thursday after several days visiting Mrs. John Tharp and Mr. Tharp.
Mrs J S Sanders and Elsie Lee spent Wednesday night with her niece Mrs W A Frymire. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Aaron Blankenship of Wewoka Oklahoma.
Soil surveys in the Runnels Soil Conservation District aid farmers and ranchers. James Barnhill notes surveys classify soils into land capability classes and guide conservation planning. The data informs terrace, irrigation, and drainage design, soil water retardation, land values, and research on crops and fertilizers.
Thirteen Winters High School students received Certificates of Acceptance from the National Essay Association under Mrs. J. S. Townsend. Recipients include Lowell Tubbs, Ginger Collinsworth, Linda Easterly, Leah Dodd, Kay Byrd, Alan Benson, Dan Roberts, Kris Vogter, Judy Smith, Barbara Hord, Glenda Crenshaw, Suzann Hipp, and Margaret Stoecker. The Gale sponsor, Mrs. Myrle Frazier, assisted.
Winters Public Library enters its eighth year offering a January special family membership of 1.50 instead of 2.00. After joining, each family member may borrow up to four books for two weeks. The library, housed in the American Legion Hall, is open Wednesdays and Saturdays 2 to 5 pm. Local clubs contribute support and funds fund new books and supplies.
J C Dick Williams of Houston former Winters resident suffered a stroke Friday at work and remains in critical condition at Houston Veterans Hospital. His mother Mrs. Birdie Williams and sister Annie Williams of Abilene are with him.
