Large Rise in Vets in Training Under GI Bill
VA records show a 46 percent jump in veterans training under the GI Bill for protective services. VA Regional Director Jack Coker said 38,000 veterans pursued such training last fiscal year, up from 26,000. About 17,500 did police and fire on the job training, 8,500 enrolled in college level police science or criminology, and 10,000 trained below college level. Additional roughly 2,000 sought other public service fields such as game warden or bailiff. The VA urges OJT in public service per the President's Vietnam veteran committee guidance.
