In Home Town columnist R C Thomas urges residents to secure Poll Tax Receipts by January 31 1966 to preserve voting rights for local state and primary elections. He notes multiple elections this year and a shortage of time, then shifts to Winters Volunteer Fire Department selling a 1965 Ford station wagon with life saving gear funded by subscriptions.
Harvey Dale Jones of Winters Lumber Co. was chosen as president succeeding W. L. Bean. Neelan Bahlman became vice president and George R. Hill treasurer. G. W. Sneed filled the remaining term after J. C. Wilkerson resigned to transfer to Colorado City.
The Abilene Reporter News sponsors a Name the Area contest with nine judges including Mayor W. M. Hays of Winters. Entries run through January 15 with a $100 prize. Judges meet in Abilene January 18 to select a winner to be announced January 23.
Bobby Bredemeyer, son of Mr and Mrs H F Bredemeyer, left Tuesday for Fort Polk Louisiana to begin two months of basic training. After completion he will enter the Warrant Officer flight training program.
Runnels County voters will elect or re elect several county officers in 1966. The four year terms begin after the primaries in May and the general election in November with a February 7 filing deadline.
Emery Bellard, coach from San Angelo High School, will be principal speaker at Winters High School All Sports Banquet honoring members of football basketball and track teams. The event, Jan 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, will honor an all around Winters athlete. Sponsored by the Winters Booster Club with decorations by the cheerleaders.
Coleman County Electric Cooperative will sponsor an oratorical contest with one boy and one girl earning an all expense paid twelve day trip to Washington D C under the program. The event marks the cooperative’s second year of backing the contest with entrants 16 to under 18 by Sept 1 1966 eligible. Winners join other co op youth tour winners and travel begins June 2.
The Winters Independent School District will begin its annual school census January 10 and run through January 31. Rob ert F. Christian, superintendent, notes census data aids state aid and class placement for 1966 67. All district children ages six to eighteen on September 1, 1966 are included, regardless of current enrollment, with slips sent home for each child and requests to notify if six year olds are missing.
Winters Public Library marks its 12th year on January 4 with new books arriving daily and a 1965 record of 11 759 books read. Miss Myra Glover notes 100+ children joined the reading club and plans for a new summer program will be discussed. funds come from memberships, fines, and donations with no public funds used.
A-3c Donnie J. Oats returns to Lookout Mountain California after spending Christmas with his mother Mrs. Lucretia Oates and relatives.
The recent audit of Winters for Oct 1 1964 to Sept 30 1965 by Cherry Eckert and Story finds each department financially sound. Total bonds outstanding 689000, with debt reduced from 732000 last year. Waterworks 122000, electric 150000, electric refunding 172000. Sinking funds total 354087 invested in government securities and bank deposits, earning 3.12 to 4.5 percent. The report notes obligations of 45000 principal and 25400 interest due in the next year.
Winters hosts its annual Junior Livestock Show this Saturday at the school barn with trophies, ribbons and $1,000 in awards. The event, open to Winters FFA and 4 H members, features swine lamb and steer judging beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free with concessions selling barbecue lunch coffee and pie.
Winners in three divisions of the Junior Livestock Show will receive cash bonuses totaling 965.00 from Winters businessmen and out-of-town donors in place of a sale of animals. Awards cover daylot steers swine fat lambs and various breeds with trophies pennants and trip prizes for top entries.
Jasper Allbright former Winters resident has been elected president of the Longview National Bank announced December 23. He joined as vice president in 1955 and rose to senior vice president in 1962 and executive vice president in 1964.
Winters boys beat Anson Tigers 62 53 and Winters girls toppled Anson 48 38 in a pair of district basketball wins. Larry Hensley totaled 18 points and Johnny Beck 16, Ida Martin led the girls with 24, Eileen Faubion 14 and Dora Snell 10. Teams meet Hamlin Friday. In B play Anson won 40 39 over Winters boys. Winters girls took second at the Trent Tournament with Ivie on All Tournament, WHSA wins over Noodle 54 24 and 56 17 against Winters B. Hawley girls defeated Winters 38 20.
The Rev. Walter C. Probst, formerly of St. Paul Lutheran Yorktown, accepts a call to St. John's Lutheran Winters. Installation by his son Rev. Walter C. Probst Jr. is set for Jan 16 after a 10:40 a.m. service. Probst has led Yorktown and Bartlett churches and served as VA hospital chaplain.
