Gift Tea Honors Mrs. Frank Deike in Paint Rock

Mrs. Frank Deike former Joy Johnson was honored at a gift tea in the Paint Rock United Methodist Educational Building. The event shaded blue and white decor with guests from Ballinger Winters and San Angelo as her wedding to Mr. Deike, married January 1, was noted.

Superintendent Carro] Tatum released the 1969 70 school calendar as adopted by the school board. The schedule lists key dates including Aug 25 faculty meeting Aug 27 first day of school Sept 1 Labor Day Oct 10 end of 1st six weeks and other holidays through May 27 teacher work day.

Dick Young Joins First Savings & Loan in Winters Ballinger Area

Dick Young of Winters has been employed by First Savings & Loan Association. Ron Anderson, president, announced he will handle loans and savings in the Winters and Ballinger area. Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Young, is a Winters High School graduate with a BA from Texas Technological College.

Zanette Moore to Wed Pat Hammonds in Winters

Mr and Mrs Ellis Zane Moore of Winters announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Zanette to Pat Hammonds son of Mr and Mrs Jack Hammonds Route 1 Tuscola. The wedding is set for Friday April 4 in Winters. Zanette is a Winters High School graduate and Texas Tech alumna employed at Winters High School. Pat Hammonds a Cooper High School graduate attended McMurry College and UT later teaching Spanish at Winters High School.

Winters Organizes Junior League Basketball Season

An organizational meeting in Winters elected Billy Buchanan as president and Lynn Billups as vice president with James West as secretary treasurer. The Winters Jaycees donated 94 for balls and equipment as plans to sponsor teams and uniforms proceed. Coaches named include Billups McAdoo Buck Buchanan Colburn de la Cruz Powers Poe Joyce Stevens, with games at Winters High School Fridays 5 30 and Saturdays 9. The league uses six minute quarters and rotating teams per half.

North Runnels Cancer Society Meets Mondays

North Runnels County Cancer Society gathered Monday night at the Chamber of Commerce office with George Garrett presiding. He reported on the January district meeting in San Angelo and announced plans for the National Cancer Crusade in April. Roger Spiller, district director, showed a film Smoking to the attendees.

Winters FTA Attends State Convention in Austin

Winters Future Teachers Association will attend the State Convention in Austin February 21 and 22. Officers and members include Cherilyn Beard president Melba Lewis Miss FTA District 15 Beckey Matis recording secretary Dianne Snell vice president Carla Davis reporter Candy Allen Ruth Jansa Darrell Hill Randy Stevens pianist and Bill Grantz. Lt Governor Ben Barnes will speak at the opening session with Dr J Elmer Morgan founder of the FTA to speak at the second session. Workshops House of Delegates and Awards Night are planned for Saturday. The Winters FTA will stay at the Villa Capri in Austin.

Winters High Blizzards Rally to Beat Stamford Bulldogs

Winters High School Blizzards overcame a halftime deficit to topple Stamford 51 to 38. Led by Terry Loehman, Johnny Catahey, Reece McCuiston, and Gary Antilley with 12, the Big Blue surged 15-3 in the third period and 15-9 in the fourth to seal the win.

Sailor Returns From Vietnam Cruise On USS Intrepid

Radarman Third Class Andes E. Simpson, USN, son of Mrs Emmett Simpson of Winters, has returned to Norfolk aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Intrepid after an eight month Vietnam deployment. The Fighting I completed a 90,000 mile round the world cruise with port calls in the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil before a six month overhaul.

Lone Star Gas Plans City Rate Increase Filing

L G James president of Lone Star Gas announces preparation of an application to file with the Railroad Commission of Texas in early summer to raise the intracom pany city gate charge for gas in Texas. He notes expenses and investments since 1958 justify the move. residential and commercial rates would not rise immediately.

Archers Hold Club Shoot In Winters Weekend

Runnels County Archery Association hosted a Sunday shoot with Abilene Archery Club members attending. Among participants were Tommy Chambliss Jr. age 6 and Donna Chambliss, two of the youngest to shoot at the Winters range. The West Texas Archery League opens its first of ten meets this weekend at the Odessa range, and Winters plans a second meet March 23.
