A. L. Mitchell and Lou Awalt will represent Winters at Boys and Girls State. Winters High School bands won Sweepstakes for the fifth time in Region II, with a concert planned in the school auditorium. Students placed in UIL events in Austin, including Marta Davidson second in Ready Writing and Evelyn Hudgins third in Shorthand, Virginia Foster sixth, and a second place for the girls doubles tennis team Ginger Gardner and Nancy Spill. Winters ISD Opens First Day of 1961-62 Year
Winters Independent Schools opened for the 1961-62 term with enrollment up 14 from last year. Increases were seen in both the high school and primary grades. The Anson Tigers defeated the Blizzard team 18 to 0. A recent cloudburst dumped 5.75 inches of rain in the area, filling both city lakes to capacity and causing water over spillways. No property damage reported, though FM 53 west of Winters experienced water on the road. Downtown streets were flooded.
