Governor Price Daniel says the State Finance Advisory Council will meet May 16 to draft a long-range fiscal policy. The Commission on Higher Education will hear a report on University of Houston staff findings in October and may recommend to the Legislature next year whether UH should become a fully state supported college. Houston residents claim a $22 million campus with 275 acres debt free, needing about $4 million yearly in operating costs.

Pioneer Resident George J Onken Dies at 89

George J Onken 89 longtime Winters Texas resident and retired farmer died Friday at his home after weeks of illness He was born in Germany on November 8 1870 and came to America with his parents later settling in Williamson County He married Becky Wessels in 1891 and the couple lived near Georgetown before moving near Winters He was a member of St John s Lutheran Church Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 pm at St John's with Rev Henry Flathmann officiating Burial followed in Northview Cemetery Survivors include his wife two sons John of Winters and George of Hobbs NM a daughter Alma Onken a sister Mrs Annie Barth a brother Henry Onken nine grandchildren 16 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren Pallbearers were Aug Stoecker Newt Stoecker Bill Minzenmayer Robert Spill Herman Bredemeyer and George Pruser

Father of Former Resident Died At Santa Anna

C. L. Boardman 65 of Santa Anna died after a five week illness in a Santa Anna hospital. He was born December 18 1894 at Valley View and married Eugenia Gardner in Santa Anna. Funeral was at First Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Elliott officiating. Interment in Santa Anna Cemetery. Surviving wife two daughters two brothers a sister and three grandchildren.

Gray Gardner of the University of Texas holidayed with his parents Mr and Mrs John Gardner. Texas deficit after March hit 88 million then fell to 76 million with further drops expected through spring due to oil revenue fall lawsuits from new severance tax and sales tax loopholes. Army recruit completes 8 week teletype course

Army recruit Ralph D. Broadstreet, son of Mr and Mrs Earl L Broadstreet, Route 1 Winters, completed the eight week teletype operation course April 8 at the Southeastern Signal School Fort Gordon Ga. He learned typing on the military keyboard operating teletype sets and was familiarized with communications center procedures. He entered the Army in November.
