Ben Barnes cites funds to avert May AFDC cut
Lt Gov Ben Barnes announced a plan to shield aid to needy families with dependent children from a sharp May cut. Legislation would let the Welfare Department transfer up to 6.8 million dollars for AFDC for the current fiscal year ending August 31, drawing about 5 million from a Welfare contingency fund and 1 million or more from federal matches. A comptroller's office representative affirmed funds can be used to prevent the reduction, following the Welfare Board's March 22 decision to set the May cut.
