The defense rested its case in the Charles A. Shepard murder trial as medical witnesses questioned the evidence of mercurial poisoning without a full autopsy. Prosecution rebuttal began, with lawyers stating it would continue late today or tomorrow.
In Maryville Missouri a nationwide search by National Guard troops and officials failed to catch the killer of 19 year old Velma Colter who taught at a country school. Citizens have raised a 500 dollar reward for the slayer. Colter had dismissed five pupils at 4 pm and was preparing to warm the room when attacked. The room showed signs of a fierce struggle.
At a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the border patrol bill, Senator Hayden of Arizona urged placing the organization under labor rather than treasury. He argued labor already runs a larger and more efficient immigration force at the borders.
Rudolph Hegovic, 19, was sentenced to 99 years in Joliet for the murder of Mrs. Mary Pelletier mother of five. Judge Joseph B. David said the jury verdict of 99 years at hard labor was just and Hegovic will be eligible for parole after 50 years and three months.

The House rejected an attempt to double the administration’s $30,000,000 drought relief package by a 139 to 105 standing vote. Representative Jones of Texas, sponsor of the increase, called for a teller count as lawmakers lined up between tellers. Teller reversal showed 189 to 138 against the move. under house rules, record votes aren’t allowed when a measure is in the committee of the whole.
Warren B. Bovard vice president and comptroller of the University of Southern California and son of former USC president George Finley Bovard died by his own hand in his home after undressing to pajamas. A note reading goodbye blew indicates a personal crisis amid reported marital unhappiness and domestic difficulties. No financial troubles were noted.
Paris December 18 AP reports that Raymond Poincare, French statesman, shows improvement after a sudden vascular spasm attack. Doctors say he had a better night and remain hopeful he will survive the temporary paralysis.
Madrid report says Premier General Berenguer, ill with tonsillitis, has shown some improvement and left his bed today. The update comes as he continues to recover in Madrid.

Rebels had recently seized Lichow Tsigashih and Kungan amid ongoing depredations along the Yangtse river. Red cannoneers continued to menace shipping despite the raid.
In Taltal Chile a wharf collapsed into the bay during a storm killing three men. About forty people on the wharf were swept into the water but rescued by clinging to debris acting as a raft. the storm caused additional damage.
Coco nino county contest over ballot inspection for the office of superior court judge goes before Judge Lee N Stratton on December 29 in Flagstaff. If Harrison demurrer fails, a three member committee will be appointed to inspect the ballots showing Harrison won by 22 votes. Norviel preferred a Republican judge.

In Wheeling West Virginia prisoners raise 25 to hire a lawyer to secure parole for Charlie Clark who refuses to behave. If parole fails he may be moved to another institution according to Chief Jailer Eugene Muhlman.
Jockey Clarence J. Kummer 31 famed for riding Man O War to victories died at his Jamaica Queens home after several days of pneumonia illness.
Vermont today mourned the passing of Frank I. Greene senior United States Senator. He died at a hospital after hernia surgery. His sons Stuart of Boston and Captain Richard Greene US Army at Fort Sill were en route to Vermont. Funeral services were set for Saturday at 11 at the Congregational church with burial in St. Albans.

Federal authorities moved to expedite Judge Clark's ruling in United States vs Sprague and Howey to the Supreme Court. Phillip Forman said he would seek judgment, an appeal petition, and an appeal order to stay Clark's decision pending review. The move follows NJ and other states challenging Prohibition as unconstitutional.

Danville Indiana December 18 AP report says H Hunter of Terre Haute member of a robber gang that robbed Clinton Indiana bank on Tuesday died at a hospital. He was the third of five bandits to die from a gun battle with pursued officers. Hunter refused to aid authorities. The other two bandits were in custody and the loot recovered.
A Sequoia gigantea to be planted in Cragmont Park Berkeley on December 28 in memory of Woodrow Wilson on his birth anniversary. City park commission will oversee the service with Dr. Stanley A. Hunter delivering the main address. Hunter once studied under Wilson at Princeton University.
Washington dispatch reports plans to start construction of the Boulder Canyon project dam around April 10 with bids opened March 4. Hoover Dam will rise 727 feet, 650 feet thick at the base, 1180 feet long, with power generation starting before completion. Labor aims include veterans and U S citizens, with 1000 to 3000 jobs and a $300 million project cost.

Chicago police report the ongoing robbery racket growing more dangerous as six holdup men are slain in a week. Last night two were killed by intended victims: Henry Escalona, 20, shot by Richard Seibold, a former officer and now butcher shop owner, and Arthur Howard, 31, whose gun went off during a scuffle with Martin Franta, a soft drink parlor patron.
J. A. Porterie who moved to Arizona 47 years ago and opened an assay office in Wickenburg died in Phoenix. He had lived there since 1883 and worked as an assayer. Porterie was born in France and is survived by three sons and two daughters, all of Phoenix.
