The revised deficiency bill passed and was signed by the president after negotiations on minor items. The conference sides reached agreement on four appropriation measures and a deficieny funding bill.
Washington June 9 In a bid to prevent a quorum shortfall the House revoked all leaves of absence and ordered the sergeant at arms to telegraph absentees to return immediately. The final conference report on the post office appropriation bill was agreed to leaving four appropriation bills in conference.
The Senate made little progress toward adjournment. A deficiency bill passed after omitting claims to appease the president, and a $500,000 Bowman act war claims move failed on a point of order. Post office appropriation final report agreed. immigration bill debated, Morgan of Alabama steering to Cuba remarks. The president signed the amended general deficiency appropriation bill to meet objections.
Senator Knute Nelson wires The Tribune from Washington condemning free coinage of silver at 16 to 1 as a danger to bimetallism and warning it would lead to silver mono metallism in the United States. He stresses the current conditions cannot sustain such a policy.
June 9 Victoria reports United States sealing vessels accused of illegally shipping Indian hunters on sealing voyages. Government steamer Quadara dispatched to Vancouver Island coast to warn away American vessels while the Kaiser’s Yacht Wins Again at Dover regatta sees Meteor placed first ahead of Britannia and Ailsa Satanita. In La Crosse Wisconsin the Norwegian synod meeting debates seminary location with no decision.
Hamilton county Democrats report 66 silver and 2 gold delegates to the state convention at Columbus on June 23. Across counties silver 307 gold 14 uninstructed 23. Chicago and Northern Pacific imposes a 6 cent fare for travel to suburbs after a bitter Cicero right of way dispute.
Reports from the Black Hills and Missouri ranges indicate at least 80 000 Southern cattle will be brought here this season, with an additional 10 000 head from Minnesota and Iowa. The cattle are valued at about 400 000 dollars yearly for the next two years, viewed as strong investments by owners.
A Havana paper cites Consul General Lee saying he came to inform himself on Cuban problems and will report to Washington with impartial justice. He is praised for friendship with Cleveland and military experience. Dawley case delays. no formal charges yet. Lee's swift action raises hopes for steady consular leadership.
Havana June 9 The Cairo de la Marina prints an extended interview with United States consul General Fitzhugh Lee. The interview supposedly grants Lee wide remarks on the Cuban question but it is doubted for exactness and Lee remains reserved while studying the issue.
The Arizona territorial Democratic convention adopted a platform calling for immediate free silver coinage at 16 to 1 and it demanded statehood for Arizona. Delegates to the national convention were instructed to vote only for free coinage candidates for president and vice president.
James J. Corbett and Thomas Sharkey signed articles for a four round bout under National Athletic Club auspices to be held June 24 in San Francisco. The fight will use Queensberry rules with 5 ounce gloves and a referee at ringside. Gross receipts split 50 percent to Corbett, 35 percent net to Sharkey, 25 percent net to the Marine in a draw.
Captain John G. Bourke of the Third Cavalry Virginia died at Polyclinic hospital in Philadelphia after three weeks of treatment. He had long suffered from diseases contracted during campaigns in Texas and the West and left a noted war record. The Chronicle notes political maneuvers and ties to Madrid as the investigation moves forward.
National committee members and business leaders in St Louis face a boycott as hotels boarding houses and cafes refuse Black delegates and alternates lodging and meals. A plan proposes funding a hall with cots and a cooking corps to house and feed those attending the Republican convention despite widespread refusals.
M A Hanna McKinley campaign manager travels by special Big Four train to St Louis to keep plans quiet and relay news via private wire. Major McKinley will stay in Canton during the convention. Kansas decorates corn train departs for St Louis with over 10 000 visitors and speeches by Ingalls Burton and Vandervoort. Washington correspondents also depart on a special train to cover the Republican convention.
Ashland Wisconsin June 9 Colgate Hoyt a whaleback steamer reached Ashland alone after leaving two whalebacks outside Chequamegon bay due to a ter rific gale. The two consorts were visible pounding on the beach while a lumber carrier and its consort struggled listing and likely aground. Wind remains extreme with many vessels anchored safely around Apostle islands en route to or from the lake head.
Publishers win approval for a time scale while wage rates remain unsettled. The disagreement over pay led to a strike, though job offices remain unaffected.
A wholesale jailbreak at Dillon frees six prisoners all charged with serious crimes. The most sought fugitive is Paul Metcalf, the Beaverhead County murderer, with the largest reward offered for his capture.

Silver forces prevail as voter interest declines across the state. Three workmen blown to pieces in Kineston New York after a premature blast at Norton cement quarries leaves three dead with mangled bodies.
Western League games in Indianapolis and Grand Rapids produced decisive scores for St. Paul 3 8 and Grand Rapids 3 13 with Detroit and Indianapolis leading the standings closely. National League results in New York Brooklyn and Washington altered the table as Cleveland and Philadelphia gained while Chicago and Pittsburg lagged behind.
The Osage Nation raid left Charles N. Dugger, a renowned Oklahoma deputy marshal, dead while attempting to arrest whisky peddlers. Deputy Marshal Joe Boyle of Missouri is also reported killed.
Iowa report states W J Lyons the millionaire lumberman and philanthropist has died in Lyons on June 9.
An attempt to revise the wage scale between the Twin City Publishers' association and the Typographical union led to a walkout of all printers on seven dailies in St Paul and Minneapolis. Reporters and clerks aided, transferring copy between offices to publish the morning papers by daylight.
