Military reports show active preparations for embarkation to Cuba continuing with high energy. In Tampa, matters are enlivened by the presence of Major General Miles, signaling heightened readiness and oversight.
Officials offer little information on troop movements from Tampa as Major General Miles supervises ground operations. Despite active preparation, no invasion orders to Cuba are expected until Admiral Cervera is defeated, with Tampa serving as general army HQ.

A regiment of 1,008 South Dakota volunteers arrived in San Francisco in three battalions within 85 minutes. Red Cross ladies hosted a luncheon and the Minnesota volunteer band played as each train arrived. The event followed news of new Cuban invasion transports and other wartime mobilization.

A violent wind storm struck Bravero Minnesota at 5 10 PM bringing rain and hail. The storm caused considerable property damage across towns in northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin with no fatalities reported. Residents reported thousands of dollars in losses from the storm's destruction and debris.
American forces under Commodore Schley engage the Spanish fleet in a preliminary battle at Santiago harbor. The engagement causes no American injuries or vessel damage, and sets the stage for a major assault once the dynamite cruiser Vesuvius clears a mined harbor entrance.

Madrid officials report Senor Leony Castillo the Spanish ambassador to France was tasked at a conference with the queen regent and Senor Sagoista to request intervention by the great powers. The aim is to secure peace on terms that protect Spain's amour propra while highlighting the risk war poses to trade for the intervening powers. Madrid circles expect Castillo to prevail.
The Madrid correspondent reports elation in Spain over another repulse by American fleets. Official U S accounts say Santiago land batteries were damaged but no Spaniards killed or wounded and no shell hit the cruiser Cristobal Colon. El Heraldo wishes the fleet had been sent to the Philippines instead of Cuba.

The estate of Cyrus H McCormick the reaper manufacturer has purchased the Chicago Stock Exchange building for 2 500 000. The engagement of Miss Clara Satro youngest daughter of former leaves Adolph Sutro of San Francisco to William J English a prominent Chicago lawyer is announced.

John Rochel a once prominent Sioux City brickmaker died last April while traveling from Dawson City to Dyea Alaska his party abandoned him due to scarce provisions He reportedly struck it rich in Alaska but could not return with his winnings His death was confirmed by a letter from his son in Seattle dated May 24 and his body will be brought to Sioux City for burial.
Iowa's Forty-ninth Volunteer Regiment, commanded by Colonel W. G. Dowe, was mustered in, creating the fourth Iowa regiment in the Union army under the first call. Meanwhile the hospital ship Solace sailed from Key West to New York with 86 sick and wounded sailors and marines, seeking cooler climate for recovery.
