Vast Black Sea Storm Wrecks Ships and Destroys Coastal Villages

A fierce December storm on the Black Sea devastated northern coastal villages near Abadza causing extensive property damage and many deaths. More than 300 lives feared lost at sea as six large ships and fifteen coasting vessels wrecked. Full extent will take days to determine.

Swinton challenges Vanderbilt to four round bout at Madison Square Garden

New York reports John Swinton the champion heavyweight Socialist offers to knock out William Vanderbilt in four one hour rounds at Madison Square Garden, with Swinton paying rent in advance and guaranteeing 20,000 spectators including Capt. Williams. The proposed stakes frame a dramatic clash of wealth and politics as Swinton asserts his aim is to deny Vanderbilt the fortune of 200 million with a staged defense and rebuttal sequence.

Desperate Highwaymen Rob $28,000 At Hobbed Point

Seven desperadoes at the point of a pistol robbed merchant J. Tyfer of $16,000 in cash and drafts and $12,000 for a railroad paymaster, plus smaller sums. No county constabulary, escape probable. Also reports in Cleveland and New York about railway earnings, assignments, consolidations, and local accidents.

Martin Battles inquest tale of remorse and murder

Martin C Battles once confined to an insane asylum dies aged about 42. He killed his rival Corneliva Lynch after a love dispute, serving time and later appealing his sentence. He endured torment, taunted by memories of the crime, and died after decades of delusion and remorse.

A Shocking Accident at Hussey Howe Steel Works

Pittsburg reports laborer James Weaver age 60 died in a gruesome accident in the machinery department of Hussey Howe & Co. steel works his arm caught in belting pulled into machinery and torn limb from limb portions of his body scattered over 100 feet. In New Orleans a lone horseman robbed a mail coach six miles south of Cisco in a recent incident echoed by the Times-Democrat report.
