Manitowoc Wisconsin dispatch reports steamer Manhattan bringing lighthouse keepers W A Shields and William McCauley with bodies of Mrs Shields and her niece Mrs Mary Davis, after capsizing off Squaw Island. Drowned Lucien Morden, two men rescued frostbitten with potential leg amputations. Shields recounts seven hours at sea, wife and niece perished from exposure before rescue.
The German training frigate Gneisenen foundered off Malaga after a violent gale. Cadets and crew struggled in mountainous waves as the ship sank. Captain Krestimann perished at his post. about 100 believed lost.

About 200 workers lose their jobs. rebuilding uncertain as the plant covered a full city block.
A circulated petition asks Congress to open and settle about 254000 acres within Polk Red Lake and Marshall counties in Minnesota. The abandoned Red Lake Chippewa lands would provide farms of 169 acres each for roughly 1584 settlers.
