London reports the Pekin siege remains unchanged as 40 000 Boxers threaten Tien Tsin. Allies move to the outer wall while villagers flee toward Tien Tsin amid shortages and a looming famine. A conference at Taku decided to refer the fate of the Forbidden City to Europe.
Washington Aug 27 Chinese officials believe Li Hung Chang the peace envoy has started for Pekin or Tien Tsin. No official word yet but aligns with expected Chinese course and may enable aerial exchanges between Li and allied commanders and ministers.
The Shanghai Times correspondent reports Li Hung Chang received Peiking news that only Japan will occupy the imperial palace. The Japanese government vows protection for the empress dowager and emperor. Mr. Morgan cites 87 missionaries and 80 converts killed at Tai Yuen Fu. Japan requires plenipotentiaries acceptable to powers before talks. proposes Nankin and Wu Chang viceroys and Earl Li, with indemnity to unlock negotiations.
Reports from Penin via Taku describe armed Chinese forces to the south and west of Pekin with a well entrenched position four miles southwest. Bengal lancers locate the stronghold as detachments from allied forces conduct reconnaissance and looting. Imperial City and Forbidden City under tight guard by international authorities. A morning thanksgiving was held by British and American legations, missionaries, and marines.
Cable from Pekin reports northern China native Christians survived the assaults but are homeless and destitute. Missionaries and local clergy are safe, though mission properties were destroyed except for one site at Tien Tein. Rev. Dr. A B Leonard, in Cleveland, wires details via Conger and three missionaries.
Curiaco reports a packing firm received a Russian government order for 6,000,000 pounds of live cattle to feed czarist soldiers in China. It is the largest such order in Chicago meat trade history.
Options were taken on every ship in the carrying trade of the Pacific. An order requires 5 090 cattle to be shipped, with the herd sent from San Francisco via Hawaii and Japan.

At a Kaukauna Wisconsin picnic a small skiff overturned on the river. Mrs Henry Quaddy and three of her sons aged 6 to 9 were drowned while Mr Quaddy and their 12 year old daughter were rescued. The body of Mrs Quaddy was recovered.
A special dispatch reports Senator Hanna will intervene in the Tennessee Republican fight between Brownlow and H Clay Evans factions. The Brownlow organization leads at Philadelphia and Hanna aims to unify the electors under one slate to end the division.
In St Paul on August 27 Donald Gray a barber and Marcus Hutchinson a saloon porter dueled over a card game. They settled the dispute with razors. Gray was shot to death at the city hospital and Hutchinson was severely cut at the central police station.
Warrants have been applied for for five men, prominent farmers in this area, accused of belonging to the mob that hanged William McCann alias Leonard to a tree near his employer’s home Friday night southwest of Warrners.
The National Association of Mexican War Veterans will meet in Cincinnati in September. The group, now mostly over 70 years old, is likely to hold its last formal national meeting.

John Brennan, a white messenger, was shot by John Davis, a Black man, and died later. Whites attacked Black men James Arnold and Alexander Ballantine. a mob attempted to free prisoner George Meyer, with police intervention preventing further violence.
New York Aug 27 World Rome special reports the pope’s reception where Archbishop Ireland was summoned among twenty one cardinals and asked about Americans returning home. Ireland improvised a ten minute French speech that captivated the attendees and referenced the Catholic Americas.
The pope grilled the archbishop to judge the orthodoxy of his ideas and his fitness for the cardinalate. Vatican circles widely predict Ireland will receive the crimson at the next consistory.
W A Brady says Jeffries will meet Fitzsimmons to decide time and place after Fitzsimmons deposits 2500 dollars for a championship match. James J Corbett, set to fight Kid McCoy on August 30, says he will meet Bob Fitzsimmons Friday August 31 win or lose his bout, and would deposit 2500 dollars to bind a match with either victor.
Akron, Aug 27 Sunday passed peacefully. Funeral services were held for Rhoda Davidson in the afternoon. The child died from a wound suffered Wednesday in riot conditions. She was placed in her mother’s arms as the carriage was wedged by the crowd. A large crowd attended, with much feeling but no excitement.
J L Stevens of Minneapolis was attacked in the yards of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railroad at La Salle Peru. The yardmaster pursued the assailants and found Stevens alive, taken to St Mary's hospital with a crushed head. He likely died.
Negotiations over machinists wages at Canadian Pacific likely to go to arbitration. Workers claim underpayment of 3 to 5 cents per hour vs other railways with lower living costs, and higher rates paid in Winnipeg for same work. Talks stalled for two days with no meeting.
National Chairman Hanna met in Philadelphia with about twenty four prominent manufacturers and business leaders for a two hour conference. The talks took place in the offices of W. W. Gibbons, Eastern Pennsylvania member of the Republican advisory board. Hanna then departed for New York.
Lincoln Nebraska August 27 Mr. Bryan returned from Omaha and spoke 11 times last week starting with Wahoo. He will leave for Chicago Wednesday to witness the Grand Army sham battle on Thursday and stay there for several days.
In Vienna on August 27 a monument to Empress Elizabeth was unveiled in the Capuchin church imperial vault where the Hapsburgs have slept since 1618. The gift comes from Hungarian women of all classes and marks the first monument erected in the chapel by non imperial family members.
