A dispatch from Pekin says the legations are freed but allied forces cannot quell a vast fire in central Pekin. Russian and American commanders clash over entering imperial precincts while fires rage, with reports of looting prevention and Chinese incendiary arson linked to the revolt.
The article reports Captain Henry J. Reilly of Battery F, Fifth U S artillery, died instantly when shot on the wall directing his battery during attacks on the imperial palace area. Five privates were killed and 16 wounded as fighting raged with Chinese troops and a French battery shelling near the palace.
Washington reports the War Department ordered the Mende to divert troops from Nagasaki to Manila. It affects 18 officers and 512 men of the Fifteenth Infantry, 10 officers and 869 men of the Third cavalry, 4 officers and 145 engineers, plus about 40,000 troops on other transports. The move ends China bound deployments. China is deemed sufficiently staffed for now.
Official cable dispatches report Germany has echoed the United States by rejecting China's peace proposal. Berlin's foreign office says no negotiations can proceed with Li Hongzhang until his authority is proven by the Chinese government.
Special dispatch from Tien Tsin quotes William Pethwick, former Hai Li secretary, urging U S consul to ignore Li Hung Chang as he allegedly represents the hostile ministry and could misrepresent their position. Dispatches from Pekin note Japanese troops at the palace on Aug 15 fighting all day after occupying the imperial grounds.
They occupied the principal gate of the palace on the 16th and cleared much of the city of the enemy, making decisive action seem unlikely earlier.
In Peru on Aug 16 the Pei Tang cathedral north of the city guarded by 80 French and 10 Italian bluejackets was relieved by Japanese and British forces. Sentries protect palace buildings to deter looting as the empress Dowager’s whereabouts remain unknown. A Berlin telegram from Aug 14 notes diplomats urged occupation of the captured palace.
The Abrenda is being fitted out at League Island navy yard and will soon sail for the Asiatic station with a full cargo of supplies for the squadron on duty there.
Edward E. Balch assistant cashier of the Omaha National bank was assaulted in his berth near Boone Iowa and robbed of 50 dollars. On arrival in Omaha he was taken home for medical care. injuries are not serious. Mr and Mrs Amarietta of Omaha were also robbed of a small sum. The assailants remain unidentified as every passenger slept through the incident.
New York August 24 The committee of 100 on India famine relief received a cable from William T Fee US consul at Bombay chairman of the relief body. It reports famine distress appalling with thousands likely to die unless rescued. It calls for money to buy food and blankets noting cholera still active and the pitiable condition of destitute women and deserted children including many boys and girls in heartrending need.
The navy reports the Harlan & Hollingsworth yard says the Stringham achieved satisfactory engine and boiler performance but failed to reach contract speed. The builders ask permission to fit higher pressure propellers, with officials believing 30 knots will be reachable.
A major lumber deal in northern Minnesota closes with St Croix Lumber of Stillwater purchasing Knox Lumber interests around Winton near Ely. The transaction values the property at about 500000 dollars, marking one of the region’s largest lumber and sawmill property deals in years.
The Census Office released figures showing Jersey City with a population of 206 423 up from 163 008 in 1899 an increase of 48 430 or 26 64 percent Hoboken rises to 9 344 from 43 618 in 1890 an increase of 15 716 or 86 01 percent
Georgetown Ky August 24 Judge Cantrill overruled the motion for a new trial in the case of former Secretary of State Caleb Powers who was convicted last Saturday as an accomplice before the fact in the murder of Williams.
In Topeka on August 24 a large crowd heard William J. Bryan accept the presidential nomination with endorsements from the Populist party led by Thomas M. Patterson and the United States Monetary League represented by A. W. Rucker. Bryan praised fusion on key issues like the money question and direct legislation while criticizing imperialism and military costs.
Kansas City August 24 The Journal reports plans to establish a great salt company to operate Kansas salt fields in competition with the salt trust. The syndicate aims to supply salt to major packing companies in Kansas City Chicago and Omaha and other cities where packing plants exist. Packers annually use about 1,000,000 dollars worth of salt.
A severe hail and windstorm struck the Janesville area on August 24, causing extensive damage to local crops. Reports from the surrounding countryside indicate great losses to leaf tobacco as a result of the storm’s fury.
Aug 24 Paris reports over 1000 cadets from the United States training ship Monongshels stranded overnight in parks and streets after their lieutenant failed to provide guidance. Unfamiliar with French, they wandered until some found shelter with sympathetic locals or hotels.
Washington August 24 Omaha Nebraska reports a population of 109 655 in the Twelfth census down from 140 452 in 1890 a loss of 87 897 or 26 98 percent. Other Ohio cities Cleveland Toledo and Columbus show large increases with Cleveland 381 768 up from 261 853 Toledo 131 822 up from 81 434 and Columbus 125 660 up from 88 150.
The Times notes that the United States will command a universal market at remunerative prices as a major cotton producer. It predicts the domestic market will be the main outlet for manufactured goods while the global market remains dominated by U S supply. American prosperity hinges on widespread use of efficient machinery, much of it devised in England.
New York reports Andrew Carnegie, at Skibo Castle, denies plans to campaign for Bryan over imperialism. The World wires from London that Carnegie said there is no truth to the rumor.
Chicago Aug 24 ex Chairman John P Hopkins former head of the Gold Democratic national committee was summoned to Democratic National Committee headquarters where Chairman Jones gave him over an hour of time. Ex Mayor Stepkins was asked to offer advice to the committee and said he would assist this year.
Datuss Tex August 24 Jos Alvarez El Pasos richest cattleman died from wounds after a shootout with four New Mexico outlaws on his ranch near Vinton. He encountered the band as they killed and skinned his cattle. A sheriff s posse captured Medina the alleged leader and one companion. The others are being pursued.
Over 1,000 Cuban teachers visiting the United States arrived in Philadelphia aboard Sedgwick Crook Rawlins and McPhen. They anchored at Chestnut Street Wharf and began a sightseeing tour after debarking about noon.
Chairman Frank Campbell of the Democratic state committees announces William Jennings Bryan will address crowds in New York City on October 14 Albany on October 17 and Rochester on October 18 Ex Senator Hill will preside at the Albany gathering and welcome attendees.
