New York August 1 John Clark Ridpath historian died at 6 30 p m in Presbyterian Hospital after a complication of diseases He had been a patient since April 26 at his bedside were his wife and son S E Ridpath Ridpath was born April 1841 in Putnam county Indiana He graduated from Asbury now DePauw University in 1853 he taught and later held chairs in English literature history and political philosophy at DePauw He authored multiple histories and biographies including An Academic History of the United States Popular History of the United States The Life and Work of Garfield Cyclopedia of Universal History Life and Work of James G Blaine Great Races of Mankind Life and Times of Gladstone He briefly edited The Arena He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in Indiana and in recent years worked on a comprehensive history of the United States

Brussels Aug 1 M de Favoreau received a dispatch from M de Cartiey de Marchionna secretary of the Belgian Legation in Shanghai July 31.
