At Striker and Conner's meat market a game rooster attacked clerk Fred Grim after a horse stepped on a hen. The bird struck Grim with a spur, knocking him down and injuring his leg. The rooster had a history of violence, once nearly striking a child’s eye and injuring another.
The Friendship engine house rooms are set for a bazaar and oyster supper tonight. The Friendship Company and Band will parade the principal streets between 7:30 and 8:00 with several selections at the hall. Members from both branches meet in uniform at 7:00.
Mr. Malcolm Bowers aged about sixty five died this morning at 7 30 near Stephenson. The funeral will be held tomorrow from Grace Lutheran Church. Friends meet at the deceased’s late home at 1 pm to accompany the remains to the city. He was a member of Turner Ashby Camp which will oversee the ceremonies.
Gen Turner Ashby Camp will assemble in the camp room tomorrow February 9 at 1 30 p m in uniform to attend the funeral at the Lutheran Church. By order of P W Boyd Jno J Williams Adjutant Commander
The Ashby Camp Guard held a meeting to announce the full officer roster. Captain A M Baker named non commissioned officers and the list includes 1st Lieut W Spott White 2nd Lieut Albert Worthington 3rd Lieut W E Barr chaplain Rev N P Dame surgeon Wm A Bell secretary Wm T Barr treasurer R Frank Barr and sergeants and corporals led by J W Sibert Hunter Davidson E B Capper Geo F Sheetz John Myers B Mitchell Knight M Lohr Capper Wm G Funk Jos E Kiger Fred Barr George Bailey J Frank Eddy.
Henry Shacklett a wealthy Harrisonburg citizen died Sunday night at age sixty seven. Once a leading Valley merchant he retired after a minor stroke years ago. Father-in-law of Republican politician John E Roller, he was cousin to Mrs Bentley Kern who travelled to Harrisonburg for the funeral held at 11 o clock.
Mr W E Koons of Emerson Drug Company travels the district with a large two horse wagon to distribute Bromo Seltzer literature. He uses a traveling wagon advertisement method and is assisted by two men as he canvasses the Valley.
Mr Pyles a Baltimore traveling man and Mr Upton Dorsey of this city have returned to Winchester this afternoon after traveling through the Alleghanies since January fifteenth.
Yesterday afternoon two boys fell through the ice at the paper mill dam near the city while skating for a drink. Master Wm. Taylor reached out to drink and sank to his neck. the other boy fell while helping him. Both escaped with only wet clothing and no serious harm.
A two year old boy of Harry Snyder died after his clothes caught fire while playing near a kitchen flame. He died three hours later as his mother found him on a table ablaze. The room suffered heavy fire damage and the house was saved by the mother's timely return. A rumor tied the child to Capt. John Glaize’s family, but relatives deny this.
Two weeks hence marks George Washington's birthday and public schools will honor the holiday or focus lessons on the patriot's life and career to deepen students' understanding of his contributions.
Two hobos called at the homes of Messrs Fred and Clarence Grim on Kent street last night and were misdirected to Messrs Saimson and Miserie Grim stockbrokers and cattle-dealers who planned to ship stock to Baltimore this morning.
Rev Dr S K Cox hosted the Braddock Street M E Church South official board at his Washing ton Amherst residence. They dined formally then conducted church business. Present were G W Hillyard George E Jenkins B J Evans Chas W Hensell C B Huntsberry W F Hutchinson George R Blake Dorsey Walter and John W Rice.
Albert H. Plumb praises Bernice Castello for expressive recitations and dramatized readings of Robin North and Damon and Pythias. The piece notes her mother wrote the descriptive poem and lauds friendship and truth themes. Castello appears in Worcester Thursday night with tickets at T. Wall's.
